French football 'race quota' probe opened

Posted by Chairman O on May 2, 2011 at 4:15pm 0 Comments

PARIS — Two separate investigations opened on Monday into reports of a controversial alleged plan to introduce quotas for dual-nationality players in the France national football team.

France's sports ministry and the French football federation (FFF) will be carrying out separate enquires with their findings expected in the next week, said Patrick Braouezec, president of the Football Foundation, who has been appointed by the FFF to oversee their investigation.

Braouezec, a member of Parliament, also played a key role in the enquiry which followed the French national team strike during last year's World Cup in South Africa.

by Uzor Maxim Uzoatu...Things Fall Apart

Achebe, according to Nwakanma, a Nigerian poet born in 1966—eight years after publication of a novel since translated into 50 languages—helped a continent claim its memories and helped restore a people. Achebe’s father was an early agent of the Church Missionary Society [5], founded in London in 1799. He was, in Nwakanma’s words, a “native informer.”

In the short story below, published in English for the first time, Uzor Maxim Uzoatu sketches the culture clash between colonialist and colonized, between mission worker and missionized, in football terms. The story was translated…

Why does the West dominate African football?

Posted by Chairman O on November 19, 2010 at 6:07pm 0 Comments

The BBC shortlist for the 2010 African Footballer of the Year has underlined West Africa's dominance of such awards - because around three-quarters of winners of both the BBC and Confederation of African Football (Caf) accolades hail from the region.

Great names stand out: Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu (Nigeria), Abedi Pele and Michael Essien (Ghana), Ivorian Didier Drogba, and Roger Milla and Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon) to name but a few.

Liberia's George Weah, meanwhile, is the only African to be crowned Fifa World Player of the Year.

Weah also won the BBC award in 1995 and this year, another West African will join him - with Drogba and Eto'o joined on the shortlist by Yaya Toure, Asamoah Gyan and Andre 'Dede' Ayew.

And it's not just a matter of a few talented individuals - look at the results and you will also see that West Africa's footballing pre-eminence is unquestionable:

Is Samuel Eto'o the world's best striker?

Posted by Chairman O on November 8, 2010 at 11:33am 0 Comments

Six months ago the question couldn't have been asked but it's certainly relevant now following the coaching changes at Inter Milan, Diego Milito's recent absence and the goals, the endless goals: is there a better striker in the world right now than Samuel Eto'o?

The Cameroonian's goalscoring ability hasn't been in question since his Real Mallorca days but it was hidden under a bushel during Jose Mourinho's reign at the San Siro given the latter's preference for Milito to single-handedly spearhead this attack.

"When we had the chance to bring in Eto'o, I thought I could play 4-4-2 and 4-3-3," Mourinho has said. "I knew that in Europe you needed to be more balanced and Eto'o could give me that."

So the Portuguese bought the Indomitable Lion for his versatility which initially saw Eto'o deployed as Milito's partner before being withdrawn more and more onto the flanks until some were jokingly describing him as a full back.

It's impossible to… Continue

Blatte United

Blatte United was founded in 2004 by a Omino Gardezi, Keke Medufia Kulego and Jakob Daschek.

The ex-pats came to enhance their career in America. But whether their careers were in Advertising, Finance, Restaurants or Movies, they all had one thing in common, an unyielding passion for the game.

Word eventually spread throughout New York about the club and its players. Soon, not only other well-known stars, but also former national team soccer players asked to join. Since then we have enjoyed a lot of success on the pitch as well as some excellent times off it (including some great off the field adventures).

What makes our team unique is its rich mix of individuals, a truly cosmopolitan squad who play football for the love it and in the spirit it should be played. It is this common attitude and our collective backgrounds as sons (and daughters) of immigrant families that bind us together. We are also proud of being perhaps the only football club to have the word 'Blatte' appear in its name!

We are also committed to an alternative football culture that actively challenges the corporate dominance of the game. We support an ideal of internationalism and friendship in football which can stand in opposition to the racism and violence which still persists in some areas of the game. We see football as a common cause that can bring people together and promote peace and understanding.

On our website site you can read about the team's latest developments, from the most recent match report to forthcoming tours. Here also you can get the latest news about the squad, read player profiles and take part in discussions.
